Resident Choir Accompanist - Julie Bevan
Julie was born in the mining town of Abertillery, and attended the local grammar school, continuing her studies at Cartrefle College of Education, Wrexham.
Her first teaching post was at Rassau Primary School, where she was involved in a music project performing Richard Roderick Jones's Game Circle (1973) for Glynne Jones (then Music Adviser for Gwent). At Trinant School, Julie was responsible for music involving school productions and choir activities.
Having a young family meant Julie taking a break from full-time teaching, although in her spare time she continued her music studies with an A-level music course at Crosskeys College, where she also sang with the Choral Society and accompanied singers and instrumentalists.
Julie's last teaching post before retiring in 2011 was at Tynewydd Primary School, where she was the music co-ordinator, developing and extending the school choir and orchestra. During her time there, Julie made many links with local amateur and professional musicians, and also acted as accompanist for cluster and transition school projects.
Her interest in piano began with lessons at the age of eight, and as a youngster she played for Sunday school and small local choirs. From 1967-69 Julie was the accompanist for Abertillery Operatic Society, playing for shows that included The Merry Widow and Oliver. Julie was also assistant accompanist for Abertillery Orpheus Male Voice Choir and Mynyddislwyn Male Voice Choir, before joining Risca Male Choir in September 1986.
Julie has recently been awarded an honorary life-membership of Risca Male Choir, in recognition of her 25 years as accompanist to the choir. Julie claims that among her interests, apart from piano, are reading, the theatre and shopping!
