Music Director – Martin Hodson MBE
Martin Hodson was born and brought up in Risca where he now lives. He was educated at the local school and attended the chapel, where, like so many other Welsh musicians, he was able to use musical abilities as part of the weekly services.
His musical training continued in London at the College of SS. Mark and John and the Guildhall School of Music where he studied organ and piano. He holds the ATCL, (piano) LRAM and ARCM (singing) music diplomas.
He returned to Wales to take up a teaching position. Since that time, Martin has pursued a highly successful career as a teacher, retiring from full time lecturing in 1997, where he has been, since 1981, Director of Music and Head of Performing Arts at the Crosskeys Campus of Coleg Gwent.
Alongside this, his name has become a byword for musical versatility.
Early in his career he was much in demand to work as an accompanist with choirs, as well as instrumental and vocal soloists. As a singer, Martin has performed in opera, (The Pearl Fishers, Moses, Attila) oratorio (including Messiah, Creation, Mozart Requiem, Bach Magnificat) and music theatre, (including The Pirates of Penzance and Oh What a Lovely War) broadcast a solo recital for BBC radio and takes particular pride in performances of the great song cycles of Schubert and Schumann. This experience, along with a love of theatre, poetry and languages, has equipped Martin Hodson well for the task of vocal coach and choral director.
