Choir Logo - The Cuckoo

The Risca Male Choir emblem
The familiar call of the cuckoo announces its arrival in the British Isles from southern and tropical Africa. In flight this long-tailed and sharp-winged bird resembles a falcon and is frequently mobbed by smaller birds. Confusion with the similarly coloured Sparrow-hawk, which also has barred chest and flanks, can be avoided as the hawk has short rounded wings.
Legend has it that the good people of Risca, knowing that the arrival of the cuckoos heralded the start of fine weather, sought to find a way of keeping the bird from ever leaving the town, and thus ensure good weather all year round. The people decided to build a fence around the tree from which the cuckoo called and so prevent it from departing. This they duly did, but unfortunately they forgot to put on a roof ... the people of Risca have been known as Cuckoos ever since.
It was natural, therefore, for the Risca Male Choir to use the cuckoo as their emblem, replacing the fence with a music stave. There is still no roof, emblematic in itself that no restriction can be placed on the musical heights to which the choir soars.
